Silence Of The Lambs Will Be Preserved
National Film Registry list announcedHannibal Lecter will be opening a celebratory bottle of Chianti and finding someone to have for dinner at the news that Jonathan Demme's 1991 thriller The Silence Of The Lambs is part of the National Film Registry's typically eclectic list of films to be Preserved For All Time.*Announced by the Library of Congress across the pond, the list is always made public around this time of year and movies make the cut because, according to Librarian of Congress James H Billington, they are "selected because of their enduring significance to American culture. Our film heritage must be protected because these cinematic treasures document our history and culture and reflect our hopes and dreams."So what other "treasures" are on there besides the psychopathic slitherings of Doctor Lecter? Robert Zemeckis' still-divisive, Oscar-scooping Forrest Gump for one, and Charlie Chaplin's 1921 classic The Kid for another. Also on the list? Disney's Bambi (1942), Billy Wilder's drinking drama The Lost Weekend (1945), George Pal's 1953 take on HG Wells' The War Of The Worlds and John Ford's Western epic The Iron Horse (1924).And it's not just big, well known titles, either: more obscure work such as 1971 documentary Growing Up Female and child labour drama The Cry Of Children from 1912 is also on there. We're especially happy to see that Ed Catmull's ground-breaking work, A Computer Animated Hand is also present, which, while it might be only a minute long, showcases a technique that is one of the roots of today's effects technology and part of the DNA for Pixar. To check out the full list, take a look at the LA Times' report on the announcement.*Mayan apocalypse not withstanding, of course.

'Twilight's' Melissa Rosenberg Becomes Highest-Grossing Female Screenwriter
Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg got an extra gift this holiday season. With "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" continuing its blockbuster run in theaters around the world -- $647.3 million in grosses and counting -- Rosenberg has become the highest-grossing female screenwriter in Hollywood, with more than $2.56 billion in worldwide revenue. In the last two weeks, the total grosses for movies Rosenberg has written surpassed those of Linda Woolverton, whose 20-year career had its biggest hit in 2010 with the Tim Burton-directed "Alice in Wonderland" adaptation. That Disney release cleared the billion-dollar mark ($1.024 billion) and stands as the ninth-highest-grossing movie of all time. "The Lion King," which Woolverton also co-wrote, is now 14th on that list thanks to a recent 3D re-release, with $945.6 million in worldwide revenue. Combined with her other produced work, those movies contribute the lion's share of Woolverton's $2.39 billion total.(On the male side, "Harry Potter" series writerSteve Kloves is the leader with approximately $6.8 billion in worldwide grosses; "The Amazing Spider-Man," which he co-wrote, opens in July. James Cameron also has generated more than $6 billion in worldwide grosses as a writer.)As with most measurements of this type, there are a few asterisks. A longtime Disney collaborator, Woolverton contributed material to the studio's animated "Mulan," as well, which grossed $304.3 million in 1998. She did not receive screenplay credit, however, so that figure is not included in her total. There is also the issue of factoring in inflation, which would have a great effect on some of Woolverton's earlier films "Lion King" (1994) and "Beauty and the Beast" (1991) -- to the tune of some $800 million more in adjusted grosses.Plus, on the heels of "Lion King's" tremendous 3D re-release success this fall, Disney has scheduled a 3D version of Beast for release Jan. 13. If that re-release does as well as "Lion King's" did at theaters -- about $160 million -- she could come close to regaining the title from Rosenberg even without an adjustment for inflation. And "Beast" did better than "King" with its 2002 Imax re-release, so that outcome is entirely possible.Still, "Breaking Part 1" isn't finished its theatrical run yet. And Rosenberg, who's repped by UTA and 3 Arts Entertainment, has another huge card up her sleeve: "Breaking Dawn Part 2," which comes out in November 2012. If it plays as well as the previous installments in the franchise, it will add another $700 million-plus to Rosenberg's total, giving her a substantial lead in the screenwriter sweepstakes. But even then nothing is settled. Woolverton has two big projects in development: an "Alice" sequel and the Sleeping Beauty/wicked witch project "Maleficent," with Angelina Jolie attached, both at Disney. On paper, either film has the potential to do huge business at the global box office. And Rosenberg is currently working on an adaptation of the young-adult sci-fi novel "Earthseed" for Paramount. Here's the breakdown:Melissa Rosenberg "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1"(2011) -$647.3m worldwide (and counting)"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse"(2010) -$698.5m worldwide"The Twilight Saga: New Moon"(2009) -$709.8m worldwide"Twilight"(2008) -$392.6m worldwide"Step Up"(2006) -$114.2m worldwideLinda Woolverton "Alice in Wonderland"(2010) -$1.024 billion worldwide"Arctic Tale"(2007) -$1.9m worldwide"The Lion King"(1994) -$945.6m worldwide"Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey"(1993) -$41.8m worldwide"Beauty and the Beast"(1991) -$377.4m worldwide The Hollywood Reporter

Analysts Cut Fourth-Quarter Box Office Estimates
Christopher Nolan Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan showed off about eight minutes of footage from The Dark Knight Rises on Thursday night, a preview that will be seen later this month in select IMAX theatres before Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol.our editor recommends'Dark Knight Rises' Prologue Screening at 42 IMAX Theaters Before 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol'Christian Bale Rates His 'The Dark Knight Rises' Co-Stars'The Dark Knight Rises' Marks the End of Christian Bale's Batman Era'Dark Knight Rises' Star Tom Hardy 'Intimidated' by Christian Bale's Batman'Dark Knight Rises' Director Christopher Nolan Reveals New Details About the Plot, Villain Bane The majority of the preview introduced audiences to Bane, the Batman movie's major villain, played by a masked Tom Hardy. Without giving too much away, the footage revolved around a heist involving a plane. PHOTOS: The Christian Bale Directors Posse: 6 Auteurs Won Over By the Actor The sequence was grand in scope, expanding the Batman world outside of Gotham City, and it was filled with a lot of tension and dread. The impact was strong, not only from the images on screen but from the score, which was reminiscent of Nolan's The Dark Knight and Inception. (In fact, the plane heist opening synchs thematically with the bank heist opening of The Dark Knight.) The crowd, made up mostly of the entertainment press and such executives as DC's Diane Nelson and Geoff Johns, left the screening definitely impressed. Some did point out one pickle, however: the sound. It may be early in the sound mixing process, but a lot of key dialogue, particularly that of Bane, who speaks via a mask, was unintelligible. When Heat Vision asked Nolan at the post-preview reception about theperceived problem, the director admitted that because of Hardy's accent and because viewers can't see his lips, there may be problems in hearing the dialogue (though he did say additional sound work would clear some of it up). And headmitted that sometimes in his movies a viewer may not grasp all the lines. But to him, the visuals are as important to the storytelling as any dialogue. "Otherwise, it's just a radio play," Nolan said. COVER STORY: Christian Bale on Why He's Starring in a $100 Mil Chinese Movie Nolan introduced the movie praising the IMAX film format, saying it was launched the year before he was born but is "the best imaging format ever created." The reason for the preview, which will only appear on about 42 IMAX screens, is to give the movie and Batfans a sense of what the experience of Rises will be in this format. Since only a handful of giant IMAX screens exist, the preview will "give (moviegoers) time to find (them)," Nolan said. Nolan also said he wanted to bring back a sense of grandeur to movies, which he said was "being chipped away" by various forces. That grandeur was imprinted on him as a child and "I struggle to recapture that," he said. Prior to the press preview, Nolan had a run-though for another a A-list crowd. Sources say Nolan showed off the footage to filmmakers including Michael Bay, Bryan Singer, Jon Favreau and Eli Roth, among others.
